To maintain the integrity of your certification, ASQ requires that you recertify every three years — either by RU credits or by testing. The purpose of recertifying is to ensure that as an ASQ-certified quality professional you maintain the same level of knowledge originally demonstrated when you passed the written examination. If you do not recertify, your certification will lapse and ASQ will no longer recognize you as “certified.”

Recertification by RU Credits

Recertification by RU credits is a simple process of obtaining a minimum of 18 recertification units (RUs) within your three-year certification period. You may accumulate the 18 RU credits from professional activities that either increase your knowledge of the Body of Knowledge (BOK) or is job enhancing. Just remember that all activities may be started before your three-year recertification period, but must be completed by the expiration date.

Refresher courses, for initial certification exams may not be counted towards that recertification period, but may be applied towards another recertification if it lies within that certification BOK or is job enhancing.

You may also choose to recertify by exam every three years in lieu of recertifying by RU credits.

Recertification by Exam

Recertification by exam is required for those whose certification(s) have expired and are past the six month “grace period” of submitting their recertification journal application form and packet. The “grace period” is the six months after your certification(s) expiration date.

You are allowed up to one year from your certification(s) expiration date to recertify by exam. If you pass the exam you will be issued a new card and certificate with the same certification number as before. If you do not pass the recertification by exam, your certification will then be de-certified and you will need to certify by exam as a new applicant. Meaning, your certification will be deleted from ASQ’s file. If you choose to certify as a new applicant and pass, you will receive an entirely new certification number, along with a new card and certificate.

Recertification Notes

The CQT, CMI, & CQIA do not require recertification. The HACCP add-on certification to the CQA will automatically be recertified each time your CQA is recertified. Otherwise, your CQA-HACCP add-on will be decertified, along with your CQA, if your CQA is not maintained.

The new Six Sigma Black Belt (SSBB) certification will follow the same recertification requirements as the CQA, CQE, Certified Quality Manager, CRE, and CSQE.
